I'm not in the tech world but I think about taste a lot. I think taste is what is 'memorable.' I feel like taste is just feeling the memorable parts of things we know to have inherent "goodness." In VC, I assume it's noticing patterns in ways people think and act, then teaching them the good/tasteful ways to build. The same goes for comedy. It's about seeing the pattern of a bit and reiterating on it. Taste is not subjective. It's seeing a quality in something that can and should be repeated across lines.

You're right about needing be compulsive about refining taste. I think time to relax and let the things we can't see gestate takes time, too, though. For me, if I start to try and break something down that I like immediately, I usually miss the real reason I like something. It's in the gestation/reflection period later that I can finally label what I've been feeling.

P.S. - I hadn't heard 'dear summer' but realized I had heard it as '530/the car's missing w/ extended intro' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUHDbzCVK1E). I've had it on repeat, too!
